How do I add email to an android device?
Setting up an email on your android device is easy. It has loads of benefits, the main one being the ability to access and manage your email on the move; portability promotes efficiency and can make it easier to manage and cultivate strong customer relations through quicker responses.
By default, android uses Gmail for its email. We have discussed how to add your email address to Gmail previously. However, adding an email account in android is different as it requires a different mail protocol for other email addresses, IMAP.
IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol works differently compared with POP3. Where POP3 downloads the emails to the device, IMAP stores emails on the mail server, allowing the user to access those emails from multiple devices. POP3 isn’t recommended for mobiles as it would eat into the limited available space, harming your overall user experience.
Change your Gmail settings
Before we can start adding the email to the android device, first make sure that your Gmail account has IMAP enabled. This is disabled by default and without it enabled you will not be able to add your account.
- Firstly, open the Gmail web application on your computer.
- Afterwards, you will be prompted to log in to your Gmail or Google account, use the one you use in the device.
- Now you have logged in, in the top right of the Gmail window, click the settings cog and then click see all settings in the dialogue box.
- From here, click on the tab Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Finally, under IMAP access, click enable IMAP and click save changes.
Add email to android device
To add an email you’ll need to have one set up, if you haven’t already, do this now. Create a custom domain email.
- Firstly, using your android device, find and open the Gmail application.
- Afterwards, in the Gmail app. Click the porthole icon, this opens the account management interface. This might look different if you don’t have an existing account.
- Next, click add another account. This starts the in-app account creation wizard.
- From here, you can see all the different email provides that work with Gmail. Click Other (IMAP) to start set up.
Incoming server settings
- Enter your email address, this can be anything you want and is effectively just a display name. Click Next to continue.
- Afterwards, in the username field, enter your email address matching your email in the cPanel account.
- For the password, use the same password as the above address.
- Once you have entered your password, add your IMAP server, this is the hostname of the cPanel server. It should look similar to cloud***.thundercloud.uk.
- Finally, the default set up is Port 993 with SSL/TLS selected. Keep these defaults and click Next to continue.
Outgoing server settings
The outgoing server settings are almost identical to the incoming settings. The only differences are the additional SMTP server field. And, the port, which by default is 465, is the secured port for SMTP connections. Copy the remaining settings from the above instructions, including username, password, and server. Click Next to finalize the changes.
Finish setting up your email in android
After adding your outgoing server settings, enter the display name. This is what will be displayed on all messages sent from the account. Finally, click Next, the wizard will run final validation checks and notify you of any issues.
